Did you check everything thoroughly before shooting?

September 23, 2018

You've set up a video communication strategy in your company, you've written your scripts, you've got a comfortable speaker and your equipment is ready? Now all you have to do is shoot!
But have you double-checked everything, and what about the little details?

When it comes to video, there's more to producing quality content than just talking into a camera. To check certain elements that may seem like trifles is to start on the road to Steven Spielberg, if he made corporate films on a smartphone, of course.

Technical verification :

Before anything else, it's essential to check your equipment. Are my battery-operated tools charged? Is the sound coming out of the microphone? Is my phone lens clean?

Dust on the camera means a visible stain on the image. As for the sound, it's crucial to check that it's audible, free from parasites such as the noise of an aircraft engine. Sound quality has a lot to do with the quality of your video. If you're only heard faintly, your speech won't have the same impact. Rémy explains it very well in this video.

Verification in your frame :

Once you've checked these details, you can move on to your frame. Putting your interviewer in the spotlight is a key step. A trash can next to you, a coat hanger, the microphone cable, a red fire extinguisher... can attract the eye and distract the viewer. Also, watch out for reflections in mirrors and windows, so you don't see your cameraman.

Once these elements have been eliminated, you're left with a "clean" image where nothing can obstruct your viewers' attention to your subject.

Checking your contact :

Finally, pay close attention to your speaker. Even if he recites his text perfectly, he can be a source of defects in image and sound.

For example, when he starts a sentence, he may make a little noise with his mouth: a noise to be avoided. Tips to help your protagonist speak with ease include warning him of his speech tics, and getting him to drink water.

As for his posture, make sure he's comfortable, that he stands up straight and that his microphone isn't in contact with his clothes. If you're in any doubt about where to place the microphone on your speaker, Patrick - Product manager at EasyMovie - has some advice for you!

If you take the time to pay attention to all these details with every video, your video quality will increase dramatically.
