A blue shirt or a striped shirt? What to wear on video?

September 30, 2018

Going in front of the camera is an important act for both the speaker and the company you represent. You are the chosen one, the chosen ambassador! So don't let a piece of clothing spoil your moment of glory...

Today, you're shooting your first video. In front of the mirror, you look perfect, wearing your best shirt with the finest, most delicate flowers. Nothing can stop you. Nothing but your shirt, in fact, as the little patterns create a wave-like effect in the image. If our best clothes don't really show us off in front of the camera, what can we wear?

Less is more.

A pretty, light blue shirt enhances every type of person. It brings out your eyes, and highlights your tan or snow-white skin. Light blue suits all types of people and softens your face. In front of the camera, you look soft, gentle and attention-grabbing. Isn't that what you want?

Keep it simple to keep the viewer's attention on your speech, not on your pretty blue sweater with the pink teddy bear. A solid color is ideal, but bear in mind that each color conveys a message. Red, for example, is synonymous with leadership and decision-making, while blue conveys a sense of creativity and gentleness. While no color is really to be avoided, I would warn you that black doesn't slim down your pretty form, and that it's best to wear a different color from your background to make the most of yourself.

Technically, which garment is the most useful?

The reason I strongly recommend solid colors is that small patterns on your shirts can create aliasing. Bugs in the image caused by those little symbols or fine stripes on your clothes. These anomalies create a blurred effect in your video that can easily make you nauseous. Like this:

So here's a tip, if you really want to wear your shirt with the tiny, delicate flowers: film yourself with your phone to see whether or not it has this effect.

And if I recommend a shirt, it's to hang the microphone on. If you don't wear a shirt on a daily basis, a t-shirt will do, as long as it's not a turtleneck, or something too tight and close to your neck. The important thing is to find a garment where you can hang your microphone and in which you feel comfortable.

Last but not least, if you're the organizer of a shoot, be sure to give these instructions to your crew so that you don't have to postpone a shoot because of a famous shirt with tiny, delicate flowers.

And if this topic has helped you, but now you're wondering which color for which message?
